MDF

WHAT IS MDF?

MDF, AKA Medium-density fibreboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood.  Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-density_fibreboard MDF material, used for painted doors in the Superior Cabinets Collection and Fusion Finishes. Our MDF meets the formaldehyde emission levels of the California Air Resource Board (CARB), ensuring healthier air quality. MDF is durable and has a high resistance to wear. It is the perfect material for painted lacquer finishes and various artisan or hand-crafted finishes. MDF is also great for environments with low humidity and dramatic seasonal changes (example: Cabins or Cottages), as cracking at door joints due to seasonal changes will not occur, unlike painted wood doors which move causing cracking at door joints.

Wood

The in-house wood collection offers numerous stains, finishes and door styles on Oak, Rift Cut Oak, Hickory, Maple, Cherry and Black Walnut. This line appeals to homeowners looking for a contemporary, eclectic, traditional or old world kitchen. The vast variety of colours available in the collection will add a distinguishing element to any design. We recommend 40 to 50% humidity levels be maintained in the home in order to reduce or prevent warping, shrinking panels or cracking of wood products.

Looking for something Rustic? If you are craving something with a little more character, consider our five Rustic wood options on solid panel doors available in Rustic Oak, Maple, Hickory, Cherry and Black Walnut.

OAK

Oak is a relatively hard, dense wood with a high resistance to wear. A porous wood with a more open grain, oak stained with light colours will show the wood and grain variation to a greater degree than with dark stain colours. However, the texture of oak will be apparent even with dark finishes, due to the porous nature of the wood. Northern Red Oak is used in our oak cabinetry.

Rift Cut Oak

Oak is a hard porous wood. Rift Cut Oak will exhibit a finer, straighter grain than regular oak. You may notice variation from piece to piece or within the same piece as Rift Cut Oak can vary from light to a dark grain. Colour variation may also be noticeable between stiles and rails due to opposing grain direction. Occasional sound pin knots and fletches may occur. This is the nature of Rift Cut Oak.

MAPLE

Maple is a durable wood. Occasional sound pin knots and/or mineral streaks may occur. Expansion and contraction is more apparent in Maple than in other wood species. Light stain colours will show wood and grain variations to a greater degree than dark stain colours. Due to the nature of maple, some stains may produce an irregular colour pattern. This is a unique quality in maple wood.

HICKORY

Hickory is known for its strength and durability. A hard, heavy wood, hickory has distinct and extremely dramatic colour variations in its grain due to the combination of sapwood and heartwood. These variations in colour are a trademark of hickory. Veneer panels and finished sides, as well as book matching on panels, may appear striped due to grain variations. This is standard for hickory veneer products.

CHERRY

Cherry is chosen for high-end furniture and cabinetry. Its colours range from natural warm honey to reddish-brown, which darken considerably with exposure to light. Due to the growing patterns of cherry, there may be mineral streaks, pin knots and gum pockets that create unique markings on the wood. These markings are acceptable and part of the unique appeal of cherry wood. Sapwood may be present in cherry and is much lighter in colour than normal cherry. Sapwood will not darken to the extent of normal cherry wood.

BLACK WALNUT

Black Walnut is desirable in high end furniture and cabinetry. Its unique characteristics define the essence of this wood type. Black Walnut is strong, hard and durable, without being excessively heavy. This wood varies in colour and grain, and is naturally light to chocolate brown in colour. The Solid woods and veneers show a wide range of figures including stripes, burls, mottles and curls even within the same piece, which is a desired characteristic of Black Walnut. Black Walnut will oxidize over time and more significantly with exposure to direct sunlight. The colour of this wood species will fade and yellow as it ages.
